SEO

Search engine optimisation (SEO) aims to improve the website's positioning in Google (and other search-engines) 'organic' search results. SEO includes on-page work (that determines the way the webpage is coded) and off-page work (eg the number, and in particular quality, of other websites linking to your website).

On-Page SEO

Google's spider programs roam the net trying to access websites to index their contents. Once indexed such websites are ranked in 'relevance' order when people type keywords into the Google search.

The aim is to make it as easy as possible for these 'spiders' to index the webpages on your website. PC Websites does this by using basic very clean 'markup' (page html code), with formatting/layout achieved using linked CSS style sheets.

Secondly it is important that Google indexes the 'keywords' that are most relevant for the content of your website, ie the words that people are most likely to use when searching using Google for products and services you offer. To achieve this the important 'Title' and 'Description' tags need the right text, and the main text content on each webpage also needs to have all the relevant keywords included. Header and sub-header tags within that text should contain the keywords and any images are given keyword-rich names and 'alternative-text' tags. We work with you, the customer, to generate appropriate text content that is engaging and contains appropriate words and phrases for good SEO.

Links between pages are added using simple text links (and not image links).

Off-Page SEO

Google decides on the relative importance of your site compared to other websites. One important factor that Google takes into consideraton is the number of other 'authoritive' websites (ie websites that themselves have high page rankings, and are related to your website content) that link to your site.

Off-page SEO is usually carried out by the website owner, by networking and encouraging other website owners to include such back-links. There are also other specialised SEO companies that can offer specific off-page SEO services. We can help with a few quick-win quality back-links, for example by helping register your website with key online directories, but aside from that it will require some work from you to gradually build up a good set of quality backlinks. It takes some time to establish good SEO.

Ad-Words

Due to the challenge of establishing good SEO through high-quality backlinks (that isn't always in your control) companies sometimes decide to invest in a Google 'Ad-word' campaign, where they achieve good Google positioning for a pre-determined set of keywords in return for pay-per-click to Google.

On-page SEO is still important if using Ad-words (as that is taken into account as well in positioning), and careful consideraton and research is required to ensure you have selected the most important keywords for the Ad-words, ie the ones your visitors/customers are most likely to use.
